Termination dust. It’s a term that I forget most people don’t know because up here in Alaska you’d be hard pressed to find somebody who doesn’t know it. It’s the first dusting of snow on the mountains, heralding the end of summer and the beginning of the colder months. I alway smile to see it because it means my favorite time of the year is here.
Summer held on longer then usual this year, and we haven’t yet really had the autumn wind storms that strip the leaves from the trees. There’s been termination dust on the mountains for awhile now. For the last two weeks the snow has stayed at an even line across the tops of the mountains – the cloud line. Today, when the mountains are not hidden by wispy clouds, I can see that the leading edge of the snow is smoother and not so much of a straight line.
It hasn’t really sunk in yet that it’s October. Any day now I’m going to start panicking about how I haven’t done any real prep for my NaNo novel, or how I’m running out of time to paint my room. But for now I’m not going to worry about it.
