Yesterday these trees were bare. Tomorrow it will be summer.

Spring in Alaska happens abruptly. After two months of mud and bare trees, occasionally interrupted with several inches of snow, a season properly known as ‘breakup’, you wake up and everything is green. The sun is shining, and the air is hot and heavy with the smell of sap. The newly unfurled leaves are shiny, and the pale butterflies are testing their wings. And for a while you can take walks without sleeves.

And then the mosquitoes come. Then it’s back to long sleeves and smelling like lemongrass.

Usually this change from breakup to summer happens over Memorial Day weekend – easily marked in my memory because its a major dog show weekend, and there’s nothing like staring at dogs for 72+ hours to really underscore the shift. It’s nearly two weeks early this year – that’s climate change for you.

I have some fabulous news I can’t wait to share, but I want to wait until it’s ‘official’ in my mind. It’s silly, but then writers are silly creatures aren’t we? Besides, my livejournal spoils things. ;)
